“Star light, star bright, the first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight”.
This is how the majority of us make our resolutions for the year, or for our lives. It feels good, it’s even kind of romantic. But I think we will all agree it’s not thatpractical. Maybe wishing on a star feels comfortable because if our desire is flung outward into the cosmos somewhere no one can see it and therefore we aren’t held accountable. If it doesn’t magically come true, nothing lost! I would dare say that there are as many wishes as stars on the Milky Way.
It is “goals”, and not wishes, that are life changers. But goals, to be effective, are not whispered in secret but must be shared in public – not necessarily to everyone, but to someone. Goals, unlike wishes, are visibly walked out, step by step, in good old secure terra firma. But a goal without accountably is like trying to walk with one leg. You might hobble it out for a bit but you will never last. Goals and accountability are your right and left foot. They must be paired together for you to hit your stride.
A research project was conducted by “The American Society of Training and Development”. Its purpose -the probability of an individual’s completing a goal based on the actions they take related to it.
Check out the probability of completion of an idea based on presentation of that idea:
1. Hear an idea…10%
2. Consciously decide to adopt an idea…25%
3. Decide to act on the idea…40%
4. Design a plan to act on idea…50%
5. Make a commitment to another person to implement plan…65%
6. Have a specific accountability appointment with another person related to implementing plan…95%
Do you see it?! Look at the percentages again. Too many people have taken a shotgun approach to fulfilling goals. If I just shoot some buckshot out there maybe I’ll hit something. That is not a goal that is a hope and a prayer.
If you are serious about completing this burning desire that you are convinced is important to you and important to others; if you want to be sure that you are going to knock this thing out of the park and you want to remove all doubt about achieving it; you now have the pathway to get there.
“Have a specific accountability appointment with another person related to implementing the plan”. According to the research this is that one action that practically guarantees your success in reaching that goal!
Now you have both the plan and the accountability. You have both feet in the game. Get someone else involved in this life changer with you. Don’t do it alone. Get a coach involved in this passion with you. How much closer to 100% do you need?!
Ask yourself this question; “Am I really serious this year about attaining this dream that I’ve been carrying in my heart for so long?” You’ll know you are serious, and that this is for real, when you take that step and schedule that accountability appointment. And don’t say; “Someday I’m going to do this.” Someday is not a day of the week. Before the day is out mark the date in your calendar when you are going to make the call.
Don’t hesitate! Remember this; “If you want something that you have never had; you must be willing to do something that you have never done”!
